Abstract

The focu® of this study was to compare the cost of solar powered street lighting and sos! of generator powered street lighting. Data were collected from examining the street lighting in the major streets in Calabar which is the research case study. cost analysis for solar and generator powered street lighting was carried out by using documents obtained from Mantract Nigeria Limited dealers of sales, installation and maintenance of generating devices. Information about sales and installation of solar power system where gotten from solar power solution company Ndidem Isang Iso Road Calabar. In the analysis, considering Etta Agbor, Mary Slessor Avenue, Marian/Ndidem Iso Road, Parliamentary Road, Calabar Road, and Murtala Mohammed Highway as major streets in Calabar and using the two means of powering street (solar and generator) for five years, it was realized that the cost of generator powered street lighting is higher than the cost of solar powering street lighting using generator is more expensive than using ar energ :chanism. It was concluded that, the solar powered street lighting is more cost effective and environmentally friendly as compare to generator powered street lighting. It was then recommended that, where electrical energy is needed in large amount and for a long period, solar power should be first recognized while for electricity backup purpose like in hospital etc, generator should be used.
