Abstract

This study investigates the antimicrobial activities of ethanolic extract of Persea americana seeds against selected pathogenic bacteria, namely Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The research aims to evaluate the potential of avocado seed extract as a natural antimicrobial agent in the treatment and control of bacterial infections. The seeds of Persea americana were collected, dried, and pulverized before undergoing extraction using ethanol as the solvent. The antimicrobial activity of the extract was tested using standard microbiological techniques such as agar well diffusion and determination of zones of inhibition. Different concentrations of the extract were prepared to assess the dose-dependent effects on bacterial growth. The results revealed that the ethanolic extract exhibited significant inhibitory effects against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with higher concentrations producing larger zones of inhibition. The findings suggest that avocado seeds contain bioactive compounds with antimicrobial properties, which could be useful in the development of alternative therapeutic agents. The study concludes that the ethanolic extract of Persea americana seeds possesses considerable antimicrobial activity and holds promise for application in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields. It is recommended that further studies be conducted to isolate and characterize the active compounds and to evaluate their safety and efficacy in clinical applications.
