Abstract

This study examines the effect of topography on drainage performance at Okenya Primary School in Igalamela-Odolu Local Government, Kogi State, Nigeria. The objectives were to assess how slope, elevation, and soil type influence water flow and drainage efficiency, determine their contribution to erosion and waterlogging, and recommend suitable interventions. A survey design was adopted, with data collected from 30 respondents comprising school staff, local residents, and environmental professionals. Structured questionnaires provided the primary data, which were analyzed. Findings revealed that low-gradient areas and sandy soils contributed to rapid runoff, water stagnation, and erosion, while uneven land slopes reduced overall drainage efficiency. Hypothesis testing confirmed that topography significantly affects drainage performance, emphasizing the need for terrain-sensitive solutions. The study concludes that integrating graded channels, slope stabilization, and infiltration systems can improve drainage efficiency and protect infrastructure. It recommends adopting low-cost, context-specific engineering and nature-based strategies for sustainable water management in school environments.
