IN-VITRO DETERMINATION OF BACTERICIDAL EFFECT OF ALLIUM SATIVUM (GARLIC) ON STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS
Abstract
Abstract
The problem of Antibiotic resistance has led to the search for alternative source of drugs. More recently, interest has shifted to plant as alternative of drugs. So, Allium sativum(Garlic) were screened for its bactericidal activities. The garlic were gotten from a popular market, washed, peeled, diced and dried at room temperature for two weeks. It was then size reduced and 50 g was weighed and soaked with 450 ml Methanol. It was then sieved, and the filtrate concentrated using the magnetic stirrer. The concentrated extract was tested against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus using the agar-well diffusion method. The extract show zones inhibition against test microbe with zones 25 mm in diameter. This was compared with other research and it conform with the result of other researchers.
