Abstract

Abstract The crude extract of Vernonia amygdalinawere screened for its phytochemical composition and antimicrobial activities. The leaves were gotten washed and oven dried. It was then size reduced and 50 g was weighed, soaked with 350 ml of ethanol and 500 mL of distilled water. It was then sieved, and the filtrate concentrated. The concentrated extracts was tested against clinical isolates of Klebsiella spp, Pseudomonas aerginosa, Escherichia coliand Staphylococcus aureus using the agar-well diffusion method. The extract show zones inhibition against test microbes ranging from 10 mm to 20 mm. The phytochemicals present were Alkaloid, Flavonoid, cardiac glycosides,Tannins, Quinones, and Saponin while phenolic compound was absent in the ethanolic extract. Also, flavonoid, phenolic compound, Tannins and Saponins were all present in the aqueous extracts and Alkaloid, Flavonoid and Quinone was absent.
