Abstract

ABSTRACT The study investigated the menace of text message abbreviations and its impacts on the academic performance of students in English Language external examinations in Ilesha-West Local Government Area of Osun State The sample size of one hundred (100) respondents were used for this study. The respondents selected were students from senior secondary schools in Ilesha West Local Government Area of Osun State. A simple random sampling technique was used to select ten (10) students each from ten (10) selected senior secondary schools. The research instruments used in this study for the purpose of data collection were a close ended questionnaire designed and distributed by the researcher. The study revealed varying student confidence levels and challenges like anxiety and comprehension issues in English classes. Low participation in discussions suggested deficits in critical thinking and communication skills essential for academic success. Text message abbreviations adversely affected formal writing, spelling accuracy, and language switching abilities. It was recommended among other things that educational app developers should create tools that aid students in practicing formal English writing and understanding the differences between formal and informal language.
