AN ASSESSMENT OF THE CHALLENGES OF SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISES IN TALATA MAFARA, LOCAL GOVERNMENT, ZAMFARA STATE. (A CASE STUDY OF GAMJI STORE TALATA MAFARA)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study assesses the challenges faced by Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in the Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State, focusing on a case study of Gamji Store. SMEs play a critical role in driving economic development, creating jobs, and reducing poverty. However, in regions like Talata Mafara, these enterprises encounter numerous obstacles that hinder their growth and sustainability.
The research identifies key challenges such as limited access to finance, poor infrastructure, lack of skilled labor, inadequate government support, and insecurity. Financial constraints remain a significant barrier, with entrepreneurs struggling to secure affordable credit from financial institutions. Poor infrastructure, including unreliable electricity and inadequate transport systems, exacerbates operational costs and hampers business efficiency. Additionally, the scarcity of skilled workers and entrepreneurial training limits the productivity and innovation potential of SMEs in the area.
The study also explores the impact of government policies and regulatory frameworks on SMEs, noting that while efforts have been made to support small businesses, bureaucratic bottlenecks and insufficient policy implementation continue to impede progress. Insecurity, a pressing concern in Zamfara State, further compounds these challenges, as frequent attacks and instability disrupt business activities and reduce investor confidence.
Through this case study of Gamji Store, the research provides insights into the lived experiences of SME owners in the region, offering recommendations for improving access to finance, enhancing infrastructure, and fostering a supportive business environment. The findings underscore the need for collaborative efforts between government agencies, financial institutions, and local communities to address the multifaceted challenges facing SMEs in Talata Mafara and promote sustainable economic development.
