FORMULATION OF ORAL DISINTEGRATING METRONIDAZOLE TABLETS USING DIFFERENT BINDER CONCENTRATIONS AND A SIALAGOGUE
Abstract
AIM:The aim of the presented work is to formulate a tablet that disintegrates and dissolves rapidly and gives rapid onset of action. Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal drug having a bitter taste.
OBJECTIVES: To prepare metronidazole tablets that have a short disintegrating time using different binder concentrations.
To prepare oro-dispersible metronidazole tablets with agreeable taste by incorporation of sweetener.
To prepare oro-dispersiblemetronidazole tablets with the incorporation of a sialagogue.
METHODS:Oral disintegrating tablets (ODTs) were prepared by wet granulation method using different binder concentrations of Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The tabets were evaluated for weight variation, hardness, friability, disintegration time, thickness, and in-vitro dissolution.
RESULTS: According to the results of optimized batches, the best concentration of
binder was 5% and gave rapid disintegration in less than 15 seconds, and showed
over 70% drug release within 5 minutes.
CONCLUSION: The batch prepared by using 5% Polyvinylpyrrolidone had the shortest
disintegration time as well as the best dissolution rate in the formulation of ODTs of
metronidazole.
