Abstract
This study investigates the influence of social media platforms in information sharing among Library and Information Science (LIS) students at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil. The study aimed to determine the types of social media used, their frequency of use, their influence on academic performance, and the challenges faced by students in using them for academic purposes. A survey research design was adopted, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 22 respondents selected from a population of 99 level-one LIS students. Findings revealed that WhatsApp, Facebook, and Telegram are the most commonly used platforms for sharing academic information. The results also showed that social media positively influences students’ academic performance by improving communication, access to learning materials, and collaboration. However, challenges such as poor internet connectivity, high cost of data, and distractions hinder effective utilization. The study concludes that social media plays a vital role in promoting academic information sharing among LIS students and recommends improved internet access and training on the responsible use of social media for educational purposes.
