Abstract

Technology has been the backbone on which global growth has accelerated. Its applications are vast with several facets yet to be explored. Household appliances and wiring experiences faults from time to time. As a result of this, there is a need for the implementation of IoT systems which will make faults finding in electrical systems easy, and possible to do from anywhere in the world. This project involves the design and implementation of a web-based intelligent motoring system for the control and fault detection in electrical systems within the home. The project employs Raspberry Pi as a microcontroller unit. Current sensors are used to measure load consumption within the home and to detect the faults within the homes. This system is designed to detect two major faults: open circuit and short circuit faults. This information is relayed via wi-fi to a web platform from which the user can access and control any of the appliances when need be. A machine learning algorithm is implemented to learn a user’s electricity consumption habit. From this information, the system optimizes the switching of the various appliances within the home. The implemented work was tested and the performance data collected for the purpose of further optimization of the system.
