DEVELOPMENT OF FEMALE SOCCER IN PORT-HARCOURT 1980-2025
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the development of female soccer in Port Harcourt from 1980 to 2025, tracing its evolution from a marginalized sport to a growing pillar of women’s participation in athletics. Using a historical-descriptive approach, the research draws on oral interviews, media reports, and secondary literature to analyze the factors that influenced the growth of sport, including societal perceptions, institutional support, government policy, and private sponsorship. This study highlights key milestones such as the formation of pioneering women’s teams, the role of Rivers Angels Football Club in elevating female soccer, and the increasing participation of women in national and international competitions. Findings reveal that while female soccer in Port Harcourt has witnessed significant progress in infrastructure, recognition, and talent development, persistent challenges-such as inadequate funding, gender bias, and limited grassroots programs-continue to constrain its full potential. This work contributes to the understanding of gender and sports development in Nigeria and underscores the need for sustained policy interventions, improved media coverage, and community-based initiatives to ensure the long-term advancement of female soccer.
