ASSESSMENT OF THE QUANTITATIVE PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF WILD GNETUS AFRICANUM (OKAZI) AND DOMESTIC GNETUS AFRICANUM
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study focuses on the assessment of the phytochemical analysis of domestic Gnetum africanum (Okazi) and wild Gnetum africanum. The leave extract was obtained sing 200ml 80% ethanol and 200ml Pyridine solution. The GC-FID (Gas chromatography – flame ionization detector) evaluation indicated 34 and 28 phytochemical components in domestic and wild G.africanum (Okazi) with a total concentration of 101.57123 and 70.43348 respectively. G.africanum is a forest vegetable that grows abundantly in Nigeria, Central Africa, South America and Subtropical Asia. Its leaves are in high demands for their nutritional and therapeutic properties used in medicinally to treat many illness such as cancer. The anti carcinogenic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of G.africanum were reported. The findings of this study has demonstrated the chemo preventive potential of G.africanum(Okazi) and also identified that domestic G.africanum has higher benefitial properties than wild G.africanum.
