PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATION OF LIBRARY MATERIALS IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN BAYELSA STATE
Abstract
This study investigates the preservation and conservation of library materials in public libraries in Bayelsa State. The research assesses current preservation and conservation methods, identifies key challenges, and proposes actionable recommendations for improvement. The study uses a survey research design, with questionnaire used as the instrument for data collection. The Cronbach alpha with a figure of 0.81 was used in determining the internal consistency of the instrument. From the findings of the study, it was revealed that the libraries have foundational preservation practices in place, they face challenges such as inadequate funding, lack of modern preservation equipment, insufficient space, and a lack of trained personnel. The findings also indicate that the libraries have implemented some essential preservation and conservation practices, but there are opportunities to enhance resources, technology, and expertise to ensure the long-term preservation of its collections. The most significant challenge identified is the lack of modern preservation equipment (mean rating of 3.57). The study recommends providing more space for the storage of library materials to ensure proper preservation and prevent damage due to overcrowding, enhancing digital preservation capabilities, and investing in modern preservation technology.
