EFFECTS OF SWEET POTATOES AND PUMPKIN LEAVES EXTRACT ON SOME HAEMORRHEOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES USING WISTAR RAT
Abstract
Haemorrheology is the study of flow of Blood element (plasma and cells) which is closely
related to pressure flow and volume and resistance of blood in vessel. Pumpkin leaves (Telfairia
occidentalis) and sweet potato leaves (ipomoea batatas) helps on blood fluidity and circulation
to evaluate their potential as natural remedies for improving haemorrheological parameters.
The study aimed at investigating the effect of pumpkin leave and sweet potato leaf extract on
some haemorrheological activities in wistar rats. To achieve this thirty albino rats using 30 rats
(10 groups), 3 rats in each groups were used. pumpkin leave extract group= Group 1(Control
group), Group 2(200 mg/kg), Group 3 (400 mg /kg), Group 4(600 mg /kg ), Sweet potatoes
leave extract group Group 1(Control group), Group 2 (200 mg/kg), Group B3 (400 mg /kg,
Group B4 (600 mg /kg), Combined leaf Extract group Group C1(200 mg/kg) pumpkin leaves +
(200 mg /kg) sweet potato leaves, Group C2 (400 mg/kg) Pumpkin Leaves extract + (400
mg/kg) sweet potatoes. Whole blood viscosity and Plasma viscosity was done using Reid's and
ugwu's method while Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was done using Westegreen method. Five
(5ml) of the whole blood was used for the study,EDTA(Ethylene diamentetracetic acid) sample
container was used. The method used for the pumpkin leave and sweet potatoes leaves was
soxlet extraction method. The level of whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity across the groups
show no significance difference from each other (p>0.05). The level of erythrocyte
sedimentation rate in group 4, 8 and 10, treated with 600mg/kg pumpkin+600mg/kg sweet
potato leaf extract, 600mg/kg pumpkin leaf extract and 600mg/kg sweet potato leaf extract
respectively were significantly lower (p
