WEB BASED BIOMETRIC IDENTITY VERIFICATION FOR BIU EXAMINATION PROCESS
Abstract
This project outlines the creation of a web-based biometric authentication system aimed at
improving security and preventing impersonation during university examination procedures. The
system utilizes fingerprint recognition as its exclusive biometric modality, providing a more
dependable alternative to conventional login methods like passwords or ID cards. By employing
the ZKTeco fingerprint scanner, the system captures and verifies fingerprint templates to
authenticate students prior to and during examinations.
The solution is constructed using a React.js frontend and a Node.js backend, integrated with a
SQL database, ensuring a contemporary and scalable web architecture. Given that the ZKTeco
SDK is predominantly C#-based, a custom C# HTTP API bridge was developed in Visual Studio
to connect the fingerprint scanner with the Node.js server operating in Visual Studio Code. This
bridging process encountered technical challenges, including SDK integration, inter-language
communication, and data serialization between the C# and JavaScript environments.
Notable features of the system encompass secure JWT-based authentication, encrypted storage
of biometric data, and role-based dashboards for both administrators and students. The
administrator interface comprises tools for managing user registrations, monitoring attendance
logs, and visualizing analytics such as the gender distribution of students. In contrast, students
are offered options to enroll their fingerprints and verify their identity before gaining access to
exam sessions.
Although the system was successfully implemented and tested in controlled environments,
certain limitations such as hardware dependencies, restricted user testing, and the lack of multimodal biometric options are recognized. Nonetheless, this project establishes a robust
foundation for more sophisticated, scalable, and secure biometric verification systems within
academic contexts.
