COMPARATIVE FOLIAR MORPHOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION AND CHLOROPHYLL CONTENTS OF EUPHORBIA HIRTA LINN. EUPHORBIA HETEROPHYLLA LINN. AND EUPHORBIA HYSSOPIFOLIA LINN. IN THE FAMILY (EUPHORBIACEAE).
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Comparative foliar morphological investigation and chlorophyll contents of Euphorbia hirta Linn. Euphorbia heterophylla Linn. and Euphorbia hyssopifolia Linn. in the family Euphorbiaceae. The fresh plants of Euphorbia hirta, Euphorbia heterophylla and Euphorbia hyssopifolia were collected in Akwa Ibom State University. The seasonal chlorophyll contents of Euphorbia hirta, Euphorbia heterophylla and Euphorbia hyssopifolia were analyzed using atLeaf chlorophyll meter model PN:0131 USA. The chlorophyll contents were analyzed in two seasons (dry and rainy seasons), chlorophyll contents in Euphorbia hirta, Euphorbia heterophylla and Euphorbia hyssopifolia were higher in dry season than in wet season. The three plants (Euphorbia hirta, Euphorbia heterophylla and Euphorbia hyssopifolia) have variations in their morphological features which includes leaf margin, leaf apices, leaf arrangement, inflorescence, venation, leaf surface, leaf base, flower color and seed color. The plants (Euphorbia hirta, Euphorbia heterophylla and Euphorbia hyssopifolia) have the same root system, habitat, habit and leaf type. The results obtained from the foliar morphological and taxonomic studies provide information about the plants (Euphorbia hirta, Euphorbia heterophylla and Euphorbia hyssopifolia). The data can collectively be used to provide information for further studies on Euphorbia hirta, Euphorbia heterophylla and Euphorbia hyssopifolia. The study revealed the morphological and photosynthetic characteristics of the plants (Euphorbia hirta, Euphorbia heterophylla and Euphorbia hyssopifolia). This work provides useful information for taxonomists who are dealing in plant Nomenclature. Further studies should be based on other species in the family Euphorbiaceae and the chlorophyll contents.
