Abstract

This project focuses on the design, fabrication, and implementation of automation and control systems for the MV Blue Ocean Water Hyacinth Harvester, tailored for operation in the challenging aquatic environment of the Niger Delta. The study addresses inefficiencies in manual and semi-automated harvesting by developing a robust electromechanical control system for the conveyor and cutting subsystems. The implemented system utilizes a 3 HP AC motor powered by an internal combustion engine for biomass transport and a 24 VDC battery-powered DC motor with a linear actuator for precise cutting control. Electrical protection is ensured through circuit breakers, fuses, and isolated AC/DC power systems, enhancing safety and reliability. Results demonstrate that the harvester’s control architecture effectively supports continuous operation under variable load conditions, improving material handling efficiency and operational safety. While the current design is primarily electromechanical, the study lays a practical foundation for future integration of sensor-based monitoring and advanced automation. The project contributes to sustainable aquatic weed management in the Niger Delta by enhancing harvesting productivity, reducing downtime, and minimizing environmental disturbance.
