HEMATOLOGICAL STUDIES OF GENTAMICIN-INDUCED HEPATOTOXIC ALBINO RAT TREATED WITH ETHANOL EXTRACT OF OCIMUM GRATISSIUM LEAVES
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Albino rats were divided into six (6) groups: Control, Gentamicin 100mg/kg alone for 7 days
Gentamicin 100mg/kg for 7 days + 50 mg/kg Ocimum gratissimum leaf extract for 14 days
Gentamicin 100mg/kg for 7 days + 100 mg/kg Ocimum gratissimum leaf extract for 14 days
Gentamicin 100mg/kg for 7 days + 200 mg/kg Ocimum gratissimum leaf extract for 14 days
Gentamicin 100mg/kg for 7 days + 200 mg/kg Silymarin for 14 days. The hematological parameters include hematocrit (PCV), hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), red blood cell count (RBC), white blood cell count (WBC), neurtrophils percentage (Neut), lymphocytes percentage (Lymph), monocytes percentage (Mono), eosinophils percentage (Eosin), basophils percentage (Basa), platelet count (Platelet), and mean platelet volume (MPV) were measured in all groups at the end of the experiment. The results showed that gentamicin administration significantly altered the hematological parameters, indicating hepatotoxicity. However, treatment with Ocimum gratissimum extract restores these parameters to near normal levels. The Gent +
O.G (200mg/kg) treated group showed the most significant improvement in all hematological parameters compared to the other treatment groups. In conclusion, this study suggests that the ethanol extract of Ocimum gratissimum levaes has potential hepatoprotective effects against gentamicin-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The effects may be attributed to the restoration of hematological parameters.
