HAEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS OF WEST AFRICAN DWARF SHEEP OFFERED VARYING LEVELS OF SCENT LEAF EXTRACT ORALLY EITHER BY DRENCHING OR THROUGH WATER
Abstract
This experiment was carried out to evaluate the haematological parameters of West Africandwarfsheep offered varying levels of scent leaf extract. Eighteen (18) healthy West African Dwarf sheepof the same age and weight range were randomly allotted to three (3) treatment with six (6) animalsper treatment in 2x3 factorial design. The two(2) factor are mode of oral administrationwhichisdrenching and through water. And the three (3) factor were 0g, 15g, and 30g of scent leaf extract. Inthis study no significant difference was observed in the values recorded for Packed cell volumecount (PCV), Haemoglobin (HGB), Red blood cell (RBC), Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) andMean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH). Significant difference was however observed for valueforWhite blood cell count with 15g of scent leaf extract offered through drenching beinghighest followed by 30g of scent leaf extract offered through water respectively. No apparent adverseeffects were noted in the treatment to the animals as the animal were healthy throughout theduration of the study. The result gotten indicates that; Inclusion of 30g scent leaf extract inwaterimproved the haematological parameters of West African Dwarf Sheep. This in-turn gives themresistance to disease and also strengthens their immune
