ASSESSMENT OF PHYTOCHEMICAL, PROXIMATE AND MINERAL ANALYSIS OF THE LEAVES OF LEPTADENIA HASTATA (RUBBER VINE)
Abstract
Leptadenia hastata, a plant from the Asclepiadaceae family, is widely used in traditional African medicine and as a nutritional source. This study evaluates the phytochemical, proximate, and mineral composition of the leaves of L. hastata to validate its use in ethnomedicine. The research aims to identify the chemical constituents responsible for its medicinal and nutritional benefits. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and terpenoids. Proximate analysis indicated significant levels of crude protein (13.33±0.52%), crude fat (4.03±0.14%), moisture (9.75±0.31%), crude fiber (11.10±0.21%), ash (17.96±0.82%), and carbohydrates (3.83±1.40%). Mineral analysis showed high concentrations of essential minerals, including calcium (8.35±0.12/100 g), phosphorus (0.40 ±0.01/100g), and potassium (17.53 ±0.27 /100g), alongside moderate levels of sodium, magnesium, and zinc. These results confirm the medicinal potential of L. hastata, supporting its traditional use for antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic purposes.
