Abstract

ABSTRACT This work examinesgambling as a social vice among students: a case study of Kogi State University. Research design was used and a total of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents were sampled for the study. The study had three research questions and four hypotheses. The instrument used for data collection was Questionnaire and was validated by the research Supervisor. Frequency tables and simple percentageswere used to analyse the research questions while chi-square was used to test the hypotheses. The findings show among others that peer pressure is a factor causing students’ gambling behavior and excess gambling leads to stealing, stress and psychological trauma from gambling which could affect students academic performance as loss of game could lead to depression. The study recommends amongst others that the University should also organize orientation programmes to educate the students on the effect of peer influence on their academic and social behaviours.
