IN VITRO ANTIPLASMODIAL ACTIVITIES OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACTS OF GUAVA (PSIDIUMGUAJAVA)AND MANGO (MANGIFERAINDICA) LEAVES AGAINST PLASMODIUM FALCIPARUM
Abstract
This project explores the anti-plasmodium properties of guava and mango leaves by their
phytochemical composition. These plants are used in traditionally, rich in bioactive
compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and phenolic acids, these leaves exhibit
potent antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory effects. In vitro anti
plasmodium cultivation were carried out accordingly WHO (2011) protocol, modified by
Ehinmidu and Adedoyin (2020). The percentage inhibition of the Plasmodium parasite ranges
from20-70% for guava leaf extract, and 20-60% for mango extract. This conclusion the fact
that guava and mango leaves extract have anti-plasmodium activity. It was recommended that
further research should be carried out to quantify the extracts and characterize the chemical
component which causes the inhibition.
