PRODUCTION OF PALM KERNEL OIL
Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this study is on production of palm kernel oil using n-hexane. Physicochemical analyses were carried out on palm kernel oil (Adin) and the following results were obtained: Saponification value; 235 mgKOH/g, acid value; 4.72 mg KOH/g, Free Fatty Acid (FFA); 2,36KOH/g, ester value; 230.28mgKOH/g, peroxide value; 4.0mEq/kg; iodine value; 17.54gl2/g, Specific Gravity (S.G) value; 0.905, density 0.905g/ml, insoluble impurities 0.04 and moisture content 0.3%. Its odour and colour were heavy burnt smell and burnt brown, respectively. The obtained results show that the oil extracted has the potential as raw material in the elaboration of foodstuffs and personal care products or cosmetics such as soaps, shampoo, skin products, make-up, deodorants, among other. This indicates a good quality of the oil as this lauric acid decreased the ratio of total to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and possesses also antimicrobial properties according to previous studies.
