IMPACT OF POPULATION GROWTH ON HOUSING SCHEME IN ADAMAWA STATE. A CASE STUDY OF MUBI METROPOLIS
Abstract
This study examines the impact of population growth on housing schemes in Mubi Metropolis, Adamawa State, Nigeria. Rapid population increase in urban areas has become a major concern, often resulting in inadequate housing supply, overcrowding, and pressure on existing infrastructure. The study aims to assess how population growth influences housing availability, demand, and overall urban development within the study area.
The research adopts a descriptive survey design, using both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations from residents, housing authorities, and urban planners in Mubi Metropolis. Secondary data were obtained from relevant publications, journals, and government records. The data collected were analyzed using simple statistical tools such as percentages and frequency tables.
Findings from the study reveal that rapid population growth in Mubi Metropolis has significantly increased the demand for housing, leading to housing shortages, rise in rent prices, and the emergence of informal settlements. The study also shows that existing housing schemes are insufficient to accommodate the growing population, and urban planning strategies have not adequately kept pace with the rate of population increase.
The study concludes that population growth has a direct and significant impact on housing schemes in Mubi Metropolis. It recommends improved urban planning, increased investment in affordable housing projects, and effective population management strategies to address the housing challenges in the area. These measures are essential for achieving sustainable urban development in Adamawa State.
