Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined socio-demographic factors influencing accessibility of healthcare services in Jos North Local Government of Plateau State, Nigeria. The problem stems from persistent barriers to healthcare access despite government interventions. The study aimed to determine how gender, age, marital status, education, income, and distance affect healthcare utilization. The Health Belief Model (HBM) and Social Determinants of Health Theory guided the research. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The study area was Jos North, with a target population of residents aged 18 years and above. Using Yamane’s formula, a sample size of 112 respondents was determined. Simple random sampling was employed. Data were gathered through structured questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS, with results presented in frequency tables and percentages. Findings revealed that education, income, and distance significantly affect healthcare accessibility, while gender and marital status showed moderate influence. The study concludes that socio-demographic disparities remain strong predictors of healthcare access in Jos North. It recommends government investment in community-based health facilities, income empowerment programs, and health education campaigns to reduce barriers and improve equitable access.
