ASSESSMENT OF HEPATIC OXIDATIVE STRESS OF HEALTHY RATS ADMINISTERED WITH METHANOL EXTRACT OF ELEUSINE INDICA
Abstract
Oxidative stress, characterized by excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), contributes to hepatic injury, while antioxidants play a vital role in maintaining redox balance. Medicinal plants such as Eleusine indica, known to contain flavonoids and phenolic compounds, are traditionally used for their therapeutic benefits but remain underexplored scientifically. This study assessed the effects of methanol extract of E. indica on hepatic oxidative stress indices in healthy rats. Thirty-six (36) Healthy rats were orally administered graded doses (100–600 mg/kg) of methanol extract of E. indica, and hepatic biomarkers of oxidative stress, including malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), and nitric oxide (NO), were evaluated. Results showed that MDA levels were not significantly(p
