GEOSPATIAL MAPPING OF ELECTRICAL TRANSFORMERS IN IDAH METROPOLIS AND ITS ENVIRON
Abstract
The lack of up-to-date information on electricity distribution infrastructure and its development is hindering effective power supply. This study utilized geospatial techniques to analyze the distribution of electricity transformers in Idah Metropolis and its environs within Idah L.G.A, Kogi State. Data on the names and addresses of transformers were obtained from the PHCN Idah branch. Geographic coordinates of these transformers were captured using a Garmin GPS and UTM Geo Map. A base map of the study area was created and updated, followed by the generation of electricity distribution maps. A geodatabase was established, and query analysis was performed. Buffer zones of 600 meters were constructed around the transformers to assess their proximity to consumers. The findings revealed a total of 47 electricity distribution transformers in the study area, with 83.0% being public transformers and 17.0% owned by private entities. The 500KV and 300KV transformers were predominantly used for public purposes. The study also found that many of the transformers are overburdened, resulting in low voltage supply to the community. Ede and GRA had the highest percentage (14.9%) of functional transformers. Proximity analysis indicated that voltage drops in power supply increase with distance from the transformer. The PHCN Idah branch is recommended to install additional transformers in the study area to enhance electricity supply for consumers.
