ROLE OF DIGITAL MEDIA IN THE SUSTENANCE OF ARMED BANDITRY IN ZAMFARA STATE.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the role of digital media in the sustenance of armed banditry in Zamfara State, Nigeria. Over the years, armed banditry has escalated, posing a significant threat to the security and development of the region. While several factors contribute to this crisis, the advent of digital media, particularly social media platforms, has provided a space for bandits to organize, communicate, and even negotiate ransom payments. This study investigates how digital media platforms are used by bandit groups for recruitment, information dissemination, and as a tool for spreading fear and misinformation. Additionally, the research explores the challenges law enforcement faces in monitoring and countering these digital threats. The findings suggest that despite the potential of digital media for positive engagement, it has been exploited by armed groups to sustain their criminal activities. The study recommends stronger regulatory measures and digital literacy campaigns, alongside enhanced security policies, to curb the negative influence of digital media in fueling armed banditry in the state.
