Abstract

The antimicrobial activities of the leaf of Fluted pumpkins Telfairiaoccidentalis on Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella shigella and Staphylococcus aureuswas determined using the aqueous, N-haxane, ethanol and methanol extracts to investigate its potential as antimicrobial agent. The preliminary Phytochemical screening of Telferiaocidentalis various leaves extract revealed the presence of glycosides, flovonoids, terpenoids, steroids, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, phenols, carbohydrates, essential oils, anthraquinone and saponins which synergistically proved antimibrobial. The antimicrobial sensitivity test conducted on Telferiaocidentalisleaves at different extract concentrations of 100mg/ml, 50mg/ml, 25mg/ml and 12.5mg/ml of aqueous, N-haxane, ethanol and methanol extract using the agar well method shows remarkable antimicrobial effect on Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella shigella and Staphylococcus aureuswith different zones of inhibition which ranges between 9mm to 18mm for all solvent. The extract showed a higher antimicrobial activity against E. coli, S. typhi, S. shigella and S. aureus. Thus, the result of the study suggests that leaf extract of T. occidentaliscan be used for the treatment of infections by the test organisms.
