INTEGRATING OF SATELLITE DATA AND TERRESTRIAL DATA FOR GEOID MODELING AT RECTOR VILLAGES OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC ADO-EKITI
Abstract
The project titled "Integrating Terrestrial and Satellite Data for Geoid Modeling of Part of Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti" aims to determine the geoidal height for selected stations, the total number were 25 within the institution's by combining data from both terrestrial and satellite-based observations. The geoid, which serves as a critical reference surface in geodesy, is the equipotential surface closest to mean sea level. Accurate geoid models are essential for determining orthometric heights, which are widely used in surveying and construction.
In this study, the orthometric heights were obtained using spirit leveling, while ellipsoidal heights were measured using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers. The geoidal height was then computed as the difference between the ellipsoidal height and the orthometric height at each observation point. The integration of these datasets enabled the development of a precise geoid model for a part of the Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti. Data processing was conducted using tools such as Surfer 10, Microsoft Excel, and AutoCAD to produce a geoidal map, contour map, orthometric map, ellipsoidal map, orthometric contour, geoidal contour, and ellipsoidal contour.
The results indicate that GNSS technology, when combined with traditional leveling methods, provides an accurate and cost-effective approach to geoid modeling. The study highlights the potential of satellite data integration for geospatial analysis, particularly in developing regions where geoid models are needed for infrastructure development and accurate mapping. This method can be used as an alternative to more time-consuming and resource-intensive leveling techniques, offering a balance between precision and efficiency.
