URBAN LAND USE LAND COVER CHANGE IN ADO EKITI, EKITI STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study aim to employ satellite remote sensing technique for generation of land use land cover (LULC) maps at different epochs to analyze LULC trend of Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area. The study utilized multi-temporal Landsat satellite images over four epochs (1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021) to assess LULC changes over the study area. The supervised classification technique was used to generatethe LULC maps and subsequently used for LULC change detection over three periods (1991-2001, 2001-2011 and 2011-2021). From the results generated we were able to determine the LULC type that increased and depleted over the study period and also forecasted the changes that will occur in 9 years' time (2030). Results showed that built environment and bare land recorded an increase from 1991 to 2021 by 22.7 Hectares and 5.7 Hectares respectively and projected to increase by 6.81 Hectares and 1.71 Hectares in the year 2030.Forest, water-bodies, shrub-land, grass land and agriculture land declined by 0.8 Hectares, 0.01Hectares, 11.7 Hectares, 12.6Hectares and 3.4Hectares respectively due to urban expansion, whereby these LULC types were converted to built environment, and the projection of these LULC types were forecasted to decrease by 13.0.24Hectares, 0.003Hectares, 3.51Hectares, 3.78Hectares, and 1.02 Hectares respectively by the year 2030.Overall, the study has demonstrated the usefulness of using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System to better understand dynamics of land use and land cover.
