ANALYSIS OF SOIL SAMPLES IN SELECTED AREA IN UGHELLI
Abstract
The experiment conducted focused on analyzing soil samples from a dump site in ovirogho, ughelli north to assess their physical and chemical properties. Various soil samples were collected from within the Same vicinity, and laboratory tests were employed to determine the physicochemical properties of the soil profiles, such as pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), and Total Organic Carbon (TOC). Metals in the soil were measured using atomic absorption spectrometry after digestion with aqua regia. Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was employed to quantify the concentration of PAHs. The findings provide valuable insights into the diverse characteristics of soils in different environments, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of soil quality. The sample results reveal pH levels ranging from 6.05 to 6.43, EC values between 105 and 140 μs/cm, and TOC percentages varying from 2.37 to 1.37%. Metal concentrations (mg kg-1) are as follows: 1.09 to 1.22 for cadmium (Cd), 4.43 to 5.03 for lead (Pb), 13.66 to 17.27 for nickel (Ni), 27.09 to 41.10 for zinc (Zn), and 3,157 to 3,966 for iron (Fe). The ecological risk order for metals is Cd > Ni > Zn > Pb. The study underscores that, except for iron (Fe), the metals examined pose environmental risks due to their relatively high concentrations.
