IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ON LOGISTICS OPERATION IN NIGERIA PORT (A CASE STUDY OF TINCAN PORT, LAGOS STATE)
Abstract
The growing complexities and demands in global logistics and supply chain management have driven the adoption of innovative technologies. Among these, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative tool, with its capacity to analyze vast data sets, automate processes, and optimize decision-making. Logistics operations at Nigerian ports, which are vital to the country's economic growth and international trade, have long been plagued by inefficiencies such as congestion, poor infrastructure, bureaucratic delays, and high operational costs. This study aimed to examine the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on logistics operations at Tin Can Ports, Lagos State, Nigeria, with specific objectives to evaluate the factors hindering AI adoption, identify the major issues affecting logistics operations, and assess the influence of AI technologies on port logistics.
A well-structured survey-designed questionnaire was employed. Primary data was used. A stratified sampling technique was used for the population sample and 160 pedestrians/drivers in the study area and 19 traffic agencies were interviewed for this study. Both descriptive and inferential statistic was employed for the study.
The study finds that AI technologies significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of logistics operations at Tin Can Ports. Regression analysis indicates that autonomous vehicles, intelligent cargo tracking systems, and AI-enabled automation positively impact logistics efficiency. ANOVA results confirm the model's significance, with an F-statistic of 54.534 and a p-value of 0.005. However, barriers to AI adoption include inadequate financial investment, resistance to change, and a lack of skilled personnel.
The study concluded that AI adoption has the potential to transform port logistics by increasing operational efficiency, reducing delays caused by port congestion, and optimizing cargo tracking and handling processes. However, the study recommended that stakeholders in the logistics sector, including government agencies and private port operators, should increase investments in AI technologies to modernize port operations.
