ASSESSMENT OF PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PARAMETERS AND HEAVY METAL IN COSMETIC
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The harmful effects of hidden hazardous heavy metals in cosmetics are not well emphasized in Nigeria. These metals are known to be of toxic effects to human according to the results of several studies. The presence of heavy metals like Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), Nickel (Ni), Mercury (Hg) and Zinc (Zn) were determined in different cosmetics products viz soap, Body cream, lipsticks, facial powder from cosmetics using atomic absorption spectrophotometer and the physicochemical analysis was evaluated. The results obtained showed the presence of these metals in the analyzed cosmetics at varying concentrations. The ranges of the concentrations obtained for Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni, Hg and Zn were: 0.0310 – 0.1000ppm,
0.6740 – 5.1874ppm, 0.3741– 4.9841 ppm, 1.0461-8.7410ppm, 0.014– 2.3640ppm,
6.9641 – 18.7364 ppm and the Physicochemical parameters ranges from Moisture(7.6411.68%).Total Alkali(0.04-1.12%), pH(6.1-12.12) and Total Fatty Matter (61.12-87.12) All samples contained heavy metals with varying concentrations. Efforts should be made to increase the awareness of the cosmetic users and the general public of the harmful consequences of cosmetics, regardless of the product cost. Major quality controls are recommended for products designed to direct contact with the human body for long time period.
