PROBLEMS FACING OFFICE TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT STUDENTS IN OFFICE TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT IN SHORTHAND
Abstract
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Office Technology and Management (OTM) is a course designed to equip students with practical and theoretical skills needed for modern office work, including communication, record keeping, and administrative functions. One of the core courses in OTM is shorthand, which involves the use of symbols and abbreviations to write quickly.
Shorthand has long been recognized as an essential skill for secretaries, administrative assistants, and office managers, as it enhances speed and accuracy in note-taking. However, despite its importance, many students in Office Technology and Management find shorthand difficult to learn and master.
In recent years, there has been a noticeable decline in students’ interest and performance in shorthand. Factors such as poor teaching methods, lack of instructional materials, limited practice, and negative student attitudes have contributed to this challenge. As a result, many students struggle to achieve proficiency, which may affect their overall competence in office-related tasks.
