Abstract

The persistent issue of armed banditry has posed significant threats to security, economic stability, and social harmony in Katsina State, Nigeria. Traditional law enforcement efforts have had limited success in curbing the activities of armed groups, prompting a shift toward community-based approaches as a potential solution. This study assesses the effectiveness of community-based strategies in combating armed banditry, focusing on their capacity to foster security, empower local communities, and reduce criminal activities. Utilizing a mixed-method research design, data was gathered through questionnaires distributed among various community stakeholders and analyzed to gauge the effectiveness of communitybased interventions. The study aimed to address specific objectives, including understanding the community’s role in security efforts, identifying challenges faced by community-based initiatives, and evaluating their impact on reducing armed banditry. The findings highlight the strengths and limitations of community-based approaches, noting that while they facilitate better intelligence gathering, trust, and local collaboration, they are also hindered by inadequate resources, lack of training, and occasional conflicts with formal law enforcement bodies. Hypotheses were tested to measure the statistical significance of community efforts in reducing crime rates. The study concludes that while communitybased initiatives have positively impacted the fight against armed banditry, their sustainability depends on increased support from government and non-governmental organizations. Recommendations include bolstering resource allocation, training, and integrating community-based security mechanisms with state law enforcement agencies to build a robust framework for lasting peace and security in Katsina State. The findings aim to contribute valuable insights for policymakers, law enforcement bodies, and local communities seeking more effective, inclusive approaches to addressing security challenges.
