FABRICATION OF A TABLE LOOM FOR TEXTILE UNIT IN VISUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT
Abstract
This project focuses on the fabrication of a table loom specifically designed for the Textile Unit in the Visual Arts Department, with the aim of enhancing hands-on learning, promoting creativity, and supporting the preservation of traditional weaving techniques. The initiative addresses the need for a cost-effective, locally fabricated alternative to industrial looms, making weaving more accessible to students. It is pertinent to have a table loom in the Department of Visual Arts. The design emphasizes simplicity, portability, and durability, ensuring that it meets the pedagogical and creative demands of textile education. Through the fabrication process, the project encourages skill development, innovation, and sustainability by utilizing locally sourced materials and fostering technical craftsmanship among students. The aim of this project is to fabricate a table loom for textile unit in Visual Arts Department. This was achieved through the following objectives: i) To fabricate a cost-effective and durable table loom using locally sourced materials and basic tools; ii) design and create a woven fabric using the constructed table loom; iii) To identify materials and tools required for constructing a table loom. The research methodology used in this study is a studio-based research approach. Through the use of the descriptive method, the various stages involved in the design and construction of the loom as well as its mode of operation are described. From the findings, it was revealed that it is pertinent for every textile department to have table looms as well as Visual Arts Department to enable students work effectively and speedily. It will also promote indigenous traditional crafts and revitalization of indigenous textile techniques and traditional artistry, which are essential components of visual arts education. It was recommended that textile industries should adopt the use of table loom and also, studies should be carried out on how to maintain the looms for continuity.
