Abstract

This research work titled: The influence of motivation on workers performance, a study of IBC Owerri, is aimed at understanding the framework within which workers are motivated for high efficiency. The study evaluated the influence of motivation indices such as incentives, working aids, training and development; and contribution of work environment on workers performance. The study utilized Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory as the theoretical framework of the study. The population comprised all the staff and management of IBC Owerri, totalling 250. A suitable sample size of 153 was selected through the Taro Yamene formula and the simple random sampling techniques were used to obtain the participants responses. Primary data were used for the study and collected through questionnaire and interviews. The data elicited was analyzed and presented using tables and percentages while the hypotheses was tested using chi-square statistical tool. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were adopted for the analysis. From the research findings, the study indicated that organizational incentives and remunerations have fair influence on staff performance while the provision of working aids such as vehicles, laptops and other working equipment improved workers performance. Hence, it was concluded that motivational elements improve staff performance. The study recommends that rewarding outstanding performance within the organization through monetary rewards should continuously be used as an important tool for boosting employee performance and in satisfying their most pressing needs and should be carefully structured to ensure they are rewarding accomplishments above and beyond an individual or group's basic functions.
