Abstract

This study explores the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding tuberculosis (TB) control and prevention among smokers in Ibadan South East Local Government Area of Oyo State. Guided by four specific objectives, the research employs a descriptive design to assess the perspectives of 100 randomly selected respondents. Findings reveal notable insights into smokers' understanding of TB transmission and risk factors, with significant awareness of Mycobacterium tuberculosis as the causative agent and recognition of smoking's potential to weaken the immune system and heighten TB risk. Barriers and facilitators influencing smokers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward TB control and prevention are identified. While many perceive sufficient information available for smokers about TB, challenges in accessing tailored information and social stigma associated with smoking emerge as potential barriers. Recommendations for targeted interventions emphasize the need for tailored awareness campaigns, accessible educational materials, and efforts to reduce social stigma. Overall, this study underscores the importance of tailored interventions to address the specific needs and challenges faced by smokers in TB control and prevention efforts. Implementing these recommendations could significantly enhance awareness, attitudes, and practices among smokers, contributing to more effective TB prevention and control strategies within the community.
