Abstract

Abstract This study examines the impact of subsidy removal on university management in Nigeria, with a specific focus on Benue State University, Makurdi. The removal of government subsidies, particularly fuel subsidies, has generated significant economic implications that affect public institutions, including universities. The study was undertaken to assess how subsidy removal influences the cost of administration, funding, staff welfare, and overall management efficiency within the university system. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to academic and non-academic staff, as well as selected students of Benue State University. Secondary data were obtained from relevant publications, journals, and institutional records. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the relationship between subsidy removal and university management. The findings revealed that subsidy removal has led to increased operational costs, higher transportation expenses, and rising cost of living, which in turn affect staff productivity and student welfare. It was also observed that the financial burden on university management has increased, thereby limiting effective service delivery and institutional performance. Despite these challenges, some respondents noted that subsidy removal could encourage better resource management and reduce overdependence on government funding if properly managed. The study concludes that subsidy removal has both direct and indirect effects on university management, largely posing challenges to effective administration in Benue State University. It recommends that the government should implement mitigating measures such as increased funding to educational institutions, provision of alternative energy sources, and policies that cushion the economic effects on staff and students. University management is also encouraged to adopt innovative financial strategies to enhance sustainability.
