Abstract

This research was conducted to produce asbestos free automobile disk brake pads using eco-friendly materials, such as; periwinkle, palm kernel, and coconut shell. The use of asbestos fiber is currently being reduced due to its carcinogenic nature, which has harmful health risks. A mould to produce a new brake pad was designed and produced. A new brake pad was produced using agro waste materials (periwinkle, palm kernel and coconut shell) as filler materials with epoxy resin as a binder and steel dust as abrasive material. Five sets of brake pad were produced by varying the amount of abrasive used in production of each brake pad. The physical, mechanical and chemical properties of each of the brake pads were studied and compared to conventional asbestos brake pad. The properties tested were hardness, wear rate, friction, shear and compressive strength and oil and water absorption. It was found that brake pads with 25% resin and 10 – 15% steel dust, produced the best result compared to conventional asbestos brake pads. Result obtained showed that these brake pad absorbed more water and oil than conventional asbestos brake pad. These brake pad showed huge potential to take over asbestos brake pad in the market, thereby reducing health risks.
