EFFECT OF HIBISCUS SABDARIFFA CALYX EXTRACT ON HAEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS ON NEW ZEALAND RABBIT BUCKS
Abstract
This study investigates the effect of Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract on the haematological
parameters of New Zealand rabbit bucks, focusing on key blood indices such as red blood cell
count (RBC), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), white blood cell count
(WBC), and platelet count. The aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa was administered at
varying doses (1ml/kgBW, 2ml/kgBW, and 3ml/kgBW) to evaluate its impact on these
haematological parameters. The results demonstrated a significant increase in RBC count, Hb
concentration, and PCV in the treated groups compared to the control, suggesting the extract’s
potential to promote erythropoiesis and alleviate anemia. However, a decrease in WBC count at
higher doses indicates a possible immunomodulatory effect, requiring caution at elevated
dosages. Phytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of bioactive compounds,
including anthocyanins, flavonoids, and tannins, which are likely responsible for the observed
health benefits. These findings support the traditional use of Hibiscus sabdariffa as a blood tonic
and highlight its potential applications in veterinary and human medicine. Further studies are
needed to determine the optimal dosage and long-term effects of the extract.
