Abstract

ABSTRACT The application of plant extracts for the management of seed-borne fungi is gaining recognition due to their natural origin and low environmental impact. This study was carried out to investigate the fungicidal effect of selected plant extracts on fungi isolated from soybeans seeds in Makurdi. Seeds of soybean sample were collected from three different sale points in each market across the four markets. Fresh Leaves of Moringa oleifera, Vernonia amygdalina, Azadirachta indica, Carica papaya, and Zingiber officinale (clove) were collected within Makurdi and identified. Fungi were isolated from soybean seeds, identified and treated with the extracts of the plant samples. Two fungal species were isolated which include Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus stolonifer. In relation to the sampling locations, Samples from North Bank market had the highest fungal occurrence of 4(57.14%) followed by samples from Wurukum market 2(28.57%) and Wadata 1 (14.29%). No fungus was observed in samples from Modern market 0(0.00%). The main effect of the plant extracts on fungus after 7 days of observation showed a significantly reduced radial growth, with the exact of Zingiber officinale, followed by Moringa oleifera as compared to the other plant materials (P
