REVIEWING THE NUTRITIONAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF WATER LEAF
Abstract
The primary aim of this study was to review the nutritional composition and pharmacological properties of waterleaf and to evaluate its role in disease prevention and health promotion. Using a systematic review approach, data were collected from peer-reviewed studies published between 2019 and 2025.
The findings revealed that waterleaf is a nutrient-dense vegetable rich in essential macronutrients, micronutrients, and bioactive compounds. It was also established that the plant exhibits a wide range of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and organ-protective effects.
Recent scientific reviews emphasize that Talinum triangulare is not only a food crop but also a medicinal plant with significant therapeutic potential, capable of addressing global health challenges such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and oxidative stress-related disorders .
