DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF AGGREGATE IMPACT-VALUE APPARATUS
Abstract
This study focuses on the development and evaluation of a modified Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) apparatus aimed at improving the accuracy, reliability, and accessibility of aggregate testing in civil engineering. Aggregates are a critical component in construction, and their resistance to impact loads significantly influences structural performance. Conventional AIV apparatuses, while widely used, often suffer from limitations such as human-induced variability, mechanical wear, and inefficiencies in testing procedures. To address these challenges, a redesigned apparatus was conceptualized, fabricated, and tested using locally sourced materials. The design incorporated durable components, precision alignment, and improved handling mechanisms to enhance consistency and reduce maintenance costs. Experimental trials yielded AIV values of 11.2% and 10.24%, averaging 10.72%, classifying the tested aggregates as “strong” according to British Standard guidelines. These findings confirm the apparatus’s effectiveness in producing reliable and repeatable results, comparable to conventional models. Furthermore, cost analysis demonstrated that the new apparatus is a more affordable alternative to imported equipment, making it suitable for use in resource-limited regions. The study contributes to knowledge by providing a cost-effective, user-friendly, and efficient aggregate testing solution, thereby advancing material quality assessment and supporting safer, more durable infrastructure development.
