Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was done to investigate the antibacterial activity of snail (mucus on bacterial isolates from wound infections). The wound infection bacterial isolates, were Staphylococcus Aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, were recovered from patients at General Hospital, Kwale, Delta State. The snail samples were sourced within Novena University Campus and surrounding bushes in Amai town. Exactly 0.2 ml of the mucus extract, manually extracted, was tested for their antibacterial activities on wound infection isolates using the agar well diffusion techniques. The results of antibacterial activity showed that both bacteria were inhibited, although, S. aureus was more inhibited than P. aeruginonas. The mean diameter zone of inhibition on S. aureus was 14.2 mm, while that for P. aeruginosa was 11.3 mm. This study has shown that mucus extracts from native snails possess antibacterial activities against S. aureus and P. aeruginonas, twowound infection bacteria. The mucus extracted from could be a source for antibacterial agents that can serve as an alternative to the expensive synthetic antibacterial agents used in wound treatment after more details studies on it.
