ASSESSMENT ON THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE DWELLERS OF OMU-ARAN AND OKE-ONIGBIN ON THE CAUSES, EFFECTS AND PREVENT OF CHOLERA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
or water contaminated with the toxigenic strains of Vibrio choleraeserogroups O1 or O139 (Clemens JD, 2017). Cholera is often characterized by watery diarrhea, with or without vomiting, and severe dehydration, resulting in death if left untreated [WHO,2016]. The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) from untreated cholera can be as high as 30–50%, but prompt administration of rehydration therapy can reduce it to as low as 1% [WHO,2016]. The global estimates for cholera cases and deaths are about 2.9 million and 95,000 per year, respectively (Nelson, etal.,2015), disproportionately affecting sub-Saharan African countries especially since onset of the seventh pandemic in 1961 (Clamens,et al.,2017).The study assess the level of knowledge of the dwellers of Omu-Aran and Oke-Onigbin on the causes, effects and prevention of cholera. From the study it was observed that there is high knowledge on cholera among the despondent, almost all (98%) of the respondent have knowledge on cholera, which is similar to the study carried out by Johnson eta l, 2014, in the study it was reported that every of the respondent turns out have good knowledge on cholera although the study was carried out among health worker. From the study it was observed that 90% of those engaged in the study know that cholera can lead to mortality, The global estimates for cholera cases and deaths are about 2.9 million and 95,000 per year, respectively (Nelson, etal.,2015), disproportionately affecting sub-Saharan African countries especially since onset of the seventh pandemic in 1961 (Clamens,et al.,2017).The acute diarrhea disease that can kill within hours if left untreated is cholera. Researchers have estimated that each year there are 1.3 to 4.0 million cases of cholera, and 21 000 to 143 000 deaths worldwide due to cholera. Most of those infected will have no or mild symptoms and can be successfully treated with oral rehydration solution. Severe cases will need rapid treatment with intravenous fluids and antibiotics.
