ROLE OF NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS (NYSC) IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (A CASE STUDY OF KATCHA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, NIGER STATE)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The objectives and operations of the NYSC are primarily geared towards the inculcation of discipline in the raising of moral tone and the development or common ties among Nigerian youths. The mobilization of corps members to secondary assignment for the purpose of undertaking community projects has become an essential feature of the youth programme. This study is set out to evaluate the roles of National Youth Service Corps members in communities’ development. The researcher developed four (4) questions. The data analysis revealed that NYSC scheme contributed significantly to the development of rural communities, and inadequate funding stands as a hindrance to the level of success to the community development projects in Katcha local government area. The researcher therefore recommends that the federal government should provide corps members with incentives so as to encourage them serve in rural communities across the length and breadth of Nigeria. It is recommended that a monthly or yearly state award should be organized so as to allow the corps members measure their individual contribution to their host communities.
