DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF COMBINED DIESEL AND STEAM POWER PLANT TESTBED
Abstract
The project, Design, and Construction of a Combined Diesel and Steam Power Plant Testbed,
focuses on developing a scalable platform for studying hybrid power generation systems. This
innovative testbed integrates a diesel generator and a propane-powered steam cycle, operating
independently to evaluate their performance under various conditions. The project aims to enhance
the understanding of combined cycle systems and explore methods to optimize energy efficiency
and system reliability. The diesel generator was analyzed for power output and fuel efficiency,
demonstrating improved performance at higher loads, with a specific fuel consumption (SFC)
decreasing as the load increased. The propane-powered steam cycle was designed to efficiently
convert thermal energy into mechanical work, with simulations confirming consistent turbine
output across varying boiler input powers. Structural analysis of the testbed frame, including stress,
displacement, and factor of safety (FOS) evaluations, validated the frame’s ability to withstand
operational loads while maintaining long-term reliability. Although the systems operate
independently, the project highlights the potential for integrating a heat recovery system to
enhance energy efficiency further. This testbed offers a reliable platform for future research into
hybrid power generation technologies, paving the way for more sustainable and energy-efficient
solutions.
