Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the viability of integrating plastic fines into laterized concrete to improve mechanical strength and durability while addressing waste management concerns. Samples of laterized concrete was made using a mix ratio of 1:2:4, with varying percentages of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of plastic fines addition. The samples were cured for periods of 7,14,21 and 28 days respectively and tested in the laboratory to determine its compressive strength. It was observed that specimens of 1 W/C at 0% plastic fines addition produced compressive strengths of 4.98N/mm2, 4.06N/mm2 and 5.64N/mm2 while that of 5% produced compressive strengths of 5.60N/mm2, 4.68N/mm2 and 5.84N/mm2 crushed at 28 days. This result compared favourably with those of conventional concrete. 20% addition of plastic fines showed to have compressive strengths of 3.69N/mm2, 4.82N/mm2 and 5.23N/mm2. Keywords: Laterized concrete, plastic fines
